EMP's hospital turnkey services rely on Pervasive for ETL capabilities

EMP supplies residency-trained and board-certified emergency physicians to staff and manage hospital emergency departments. At 80 U.S. hospitals and counting, the company provides turnkey programs that offer higher levels of quality patient care, decreased malpractice liability claims, enhanced patient experience, hospital admissions and improved co-pay collections. EMP and its sister company Medical Billing and Financial Services (MBFS) achieve many of these objectives by placing great emphasis on efficiency and accuracy in the administrative and medical billing areas of its business. EMP and MBFS use IDX enterprise billing, Discus chart scanning software and OnBase document management and workflow software to offer a high-performance, paperless operation.

Pervasive Software provides the ongoing ETL capabilities, conversion to HL7, and HIPAA verification needed to process the patient billing for the hospital contracts EMP maintains.

Data accuracy, compliance assurance

MBFS billing centers process over 1.8 million emergency department visits per year. EMP wanted complete assurance that the patient information it receives from customers is correct, coded properly and meets HIPAA requirements.

Scalability

The company particularly needed to take patient demographic data from a variety of hospital systems and compare it with data in the existing billing system in order to speed and automate billing processes. To do so, EMP looked for an ETL tool set that could translate the different formats of its 80 hospital customers to HL7 to compare to IDX data and to address HIPAA compliance requirements. The tool set also needed to be versatile and scalable to meet the company’s growing operations.

Pervasive integration has proven to be instrumental in speeding the verification process as patient data comes into the IDX document management system. The system now automatically forwards transactions for existing patients with no demographic changes to the coding and billing system, reducing manual verification processes and speeding time to revenue.

As Dave Peppard, EMP’s CIO, said, “We wanted to get to the point that if patient information matches perfectly, we could bypass the verification department and go straight to coding and billing. We’d like to only go to verification if we get an existing patient’s information that does not match. Pervasive is really helping us get to that point.”

Going into a new hospital, EMP typically encounters many data challenges. The company depends on Pervasive Data Integrator to speed integration while delivering automated patient data flow. As EMS rolls out new hospital contracts, many at high-volume sites, EMP relies heavily on Pervasive Data Integrator. “We have to have an effective data and application integration toolset – Pervasive Data Integrator is vital to our growth,” EMP CIO Dave Peppard said.

In the future, EMP will use Pervasive Data Integrator to help improve the insurance carrier-paying side of its business, furthering electronic payment and presentment. Pervasive will play a significant role in achieving a move to daily billing to some 16,000 insurance carriers.
